Message from the Vice Chancellor of Research & Economic Development

Welcome to the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Office Research Services and Economic Development!  The University of Missouri at Kansas City, UMKC, is an urban serving community-based, research university providing a foundation to address the health concerns of today and tomorrow with discoveries and their application. UMKC is committed to contributing to national and internationally recognized research.

The mission of our office is to support the scientific, scholarly, and creative research endeavors of the faculty, students, and staff at UMKC and assist in turning these creations and discoveries into uses and practical applications for patients and our population.

We are committed to promoting and supporting the goals of the UMKC Strategic Plan specifically:

Goal 2. Lead in life and health sciences:  To attain national recognition for excellence in research, expand opportunities for clinical practitioner training and provide outstanding health care delivery.

Goal 6. Promote research and economic development:  To produce world-class scholarship and creative activity, encourage entrepreneurship, foster innovation, increase technology transfer, and build relationships that create economic and workforce development.

Our office is multifunctional to meet both the research and the economic development needs of our faculty, staff, and students in order to better integrate and serve our community.  UMKC is a core member of the regional life sciences consortium and continues to support research laboratories and core facilities, establish and promote disease-defined centers of excellence, and enhance our research infrastructure.

Our research office oversees research compliance relating to federal, state, and local regulations which includes oversight of use of human subjects or animals in research.  We also provide pre and post award submission and management service.  The office oversees core facilities supporting research such as the LARC.  Our Technology Transfer office supports and protects the intellectual contributions of our faculty and students. Our Innovation Center focuses on economical development and commercialization of UMKC's intellectual property.
