Research awards are based to a great extent on the qualifications and effort of the principal investigator (PI).

Your department, dean, ORS, and ultimately your sponsor should be notified if a PI chooses to

• withdraw from a project
• temporarily leave for an extended period of time
• reduce his or her level of effort
• sever his or her connection with the university

In many cases, the change in PIs and even “key personnel” must be approved by the sponsor or funding agency.
