Don’t wait until the last minute to request an extension of your project. Some sponsors require you to submit your extension request several months before the project’s end date—and late requests may be rejected. Other sponsors or funding agencies may be limited by statutory requirements from extending an end date beyond a certain timeframe.
- Many sponsors will not accept a request for an extension unless it is submitted by an authorized organizational official.
Extensions for Federal Grants
Many federal grants issued under the Research Terms and Conditions include an option to extend the end date of a project for up to one year without requesting the sponsor's approval. However, UMKC is required to notify the sponsor before exercising this option.
For the benefit of your research project, consult the terms and conditions of your award and talk with your post-award administrator as soon you feel you may need additional time.
