Technology Transfer Overall Process

The Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) serves the faculty and researchers of UMKC in seeking to protect and commercialize intellectual property coming from the campus. OTC provides the following activities and processes in evaluating UMKC technologies:
  • Receive invention disclosure information from faculty and staff.
  • Evaluate inventions for patentability and market potential.
  • Secure intellectual-property protection in patents, copyrights and trademarks.
  • Identify and contact companies that have the expertise and resources necessary to bring an invention to market.
  • Negotiate licenses and other intellectual-property agreements with companies interested in further developing UMKC intellectual property.
  • Manage reporting and compliance obligations for federal, state and industry research contracts.
  • Receive and distribute royalty money to inventors, departments and the university.
  • Encourage a reinvestment in research and encourage disclosure of intellectual property.
  • Provide educational training and resources on prior art assessment and technology transfer
