IRB Submission Types

Submission types fall under three main categories: NHSR, Exempt Determinations and Expedited Review.

Not Human Subjects Research (NHSR)

  • The Research Compliance Office and Institutional Review Board (IRB) are responsible for oversight of all research activities involving human subjects. 

Expedited Review

  • Expedited does not mean that the review is less rigorous or happens more quickly than convened review. It refers, instead, to certain types of research considered to involve minimal risk.

Exempt Determinations

  • Research activities in which the only involvement of human subjects will be in one or more of the exempt categories defined by the Federal regulations, will be given an exempt determination, rather than an IRB approval. Exempt studies are so named because they are exempt from some of the Federal regulations.
