Preparing a Grant Budget

As a first step in budget preparation, applicants are encouraged to read through the grant narrative and assign costs to each activity that is referenced.  Grant project budgets must be all-inclusive and provide adequate funding not only for salaries and fringe benefits but also for indirect operating expenses such as postage, supplies, travel and audit fees.  Sample budgets can assist with constructing a line item budget in the event that the funding source does not provide a form and/or help applicants develop a budget and then transfer it to the funding source's required budget forms.  Budget line items may include:
